Mercy Ships is an international humanitarian NGO whose mission is to improve access to health care in African countries. The care is provided on board the NGO's ships that dock in ports and is free of charge.
Its headquarters are located in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In 1978, American missionaries Donald Stephens and Deyon purchased a ship for one million dollars, with the aim of transforming it into a hospital ship, in order to help the needy around the world. The organization was founded the same year in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In 1982, after 4 years of modernization, the liner renamed Anastasis was transformed into a floating hospital; it has 3 operating rooms and 1 hospitalization room with 40 beds.

Mercy ships owns 2 hospital ships, the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy.

The NGO provides free health care in the fields of gynecology, ophthalmology, surgery and dental care.
