The municipal administration is made up of the General Secretariat and five departments, each of which has several services.
Municipal departments

Individually, each of the five magistrates of the Administrative Council is the full-time head of one of the administration's sectors of activity. He or she is said to chair a department. Only the General Secretariat does not depend on a magistrate and is placed under the authority of the Administrative Council.

Public health is one of the missions of the Canton of Geneva. However, the city of Geneva is acting on the determinants of health, notably in its plan to combat the effects of climate change. The city is taking action by

  • Reduction of heat islands, as a priority in certain neighbourhoods, in order to reduce socio-economic inequalities in the face of the effects of climate change;
  • Equitable and rapid access to information and emergency instructions to deal with extreme weather events;
  • Limitation of individual motorised thermal transport in the event of a heatwave;
  • Increased mutual aid for the elderly with the "local heat wave plans";
  • Development of the "Youth and Climate" programme;
  • Promotion of working conditions adapted to extreme weather events

The City of Geneva has been active in the creation of the Geneva Cities Hub. This is a new organisation that aims to bring together cities and city networks from around the world with the urban actors of international Geneva.
