Opened in 1989, L'Usine is one of Switzerland's leading self-managed cultural centres and a firm favourite with its European neighbours. The umbrella association promotes a work ethic based on self-management, multiculturalism and openness to others. L'Usine is an umbrella association for around twenty collectives and associations, the most visible of which are the public venues that offer a programme of live shows, concerts, cinema, exhibitions, performances, festivals and celebrations.

The Usine also hosts a host of workshops and creative spaces.
